School Business Management in the 21st Century.
Association of School Business Officials International, Reston, VA.
As society's fundamental characteristics change, schools and school leaders must be prepared to modify the educational enterprise to meet the new and unique needs of adults and youngsters in the 21st century. To anticipate and control change, the school business manager must be able to project future trends, issues, and challenges. In this volume, 15 authors provide the school business manager with some insights regarding the future of U.S. education and their impact on the school business management function. The articles address organizational management trends, political and regulatory changes, U.S. demographic characteristics, forecasting technique, budgeting trends, revenue outlook, and information management systems. In addition, future trends in personnel issues, risk management, food service, school bus transportation, curriculum development, computer applications, and school facilities are highlighted. The concluding essay challenges school business officials to examine themselves and their school districts and to assess readiness for change. Large-scale organizational change includes several key elements: pattern-breaking, experimenting, visioning, bonding, and attunement. To be effective change agents, officials need to identify and overcome pervasive technical, political, and cultural reasons for resisting change. Each chapter contains extensive references. (MLH)
