Affordable housing is an elusive commodity for students in Paris and much of the rest of Europe. Many European universities are in cities where property values have soared in recent years--along with higher-education enrollment figures and the number of students vying for rooms. Few of the universities have dormitories, and students are left largely to their own devices to find lodging. Campuses often occupy premium real estate but cannot expand easily to build much-needed classrooms and laboratory space, let alone student housing. This article reports how students are turning to unconventional setups such as "intergenerational lodging" and group housing to somehow alleviate the lack of decent residences in the cities.
