The Epidemiology of Peace and War.
Beer, Francis A.
Health science (epidemiology) is a relatively advanced discipline which offers theories and methods which could be useful in peace science (polemology). Similarities between war and disease, peace and health, center around concern with prevention of physical damage and death on the one hand and preservation and extension of human life on the other. While the insights and innovations of epidemiological research receive much attention and imply areas of further research, little is known about prediction, explanation, and prescription of peace and war. It appears that once the more integrated and precise methods of epidemiology are applied to polemology, an increase in knowledge about peace and war will likely ensue. The epidemiological model suggests that description should move toward an integrated definition which includes both broad and narrow dimensions. Explanation of peace and war must focus on a system of multiple interrelated causes, including social factors such as technology, biological and physical dimensions, and influences such as the rationality and irrationality of decision makers. Prediction should include prognoses of war and specification of nations at high risk of war. Prescription implies war prevention through global peace maintenance and positive alteration of chronic risk factors. (Author/DB)
