Making the Big Decisions: A Young Librarian's Reorganization of an Academic Library
Schutz, Christine
Library Journal, v130 n12 p50 Jul 2005
With a mission in mind to change the world, one bibliographic corner at a time Christine Schultz, began with a dream of being in charge. In the Fall of 2004, she was promoted to the position of Library Director at a small, private liberal arts college. In this article, she shares how she overcame the challenges of a tight budget, and a building that presented a number of challenges to modern and efficient library service, not the least of which was its late 1960s color scheme of orange, gold, and olive green. With limited financial resources, she enlisted library staff members, one of whom found some thrift store chairs, a couch, bargain fabrics, and reupholstered them to create comfortable gathering places for students. They painted the walls around one seating area and installed a low-cost picture hanging rack (designed by one of the art faculty) as a gallery space for student and faculty artwork. A plan was hatched for a massive shift of materials to enable students to find what they need more efficiently: periodicals all in one place, and government documents in a publicly accessible area. Every previous policy was changed. Loan periods were lengthened (from three to six weeks for students) and grace periods (from three to ten days), the schedule for sending out overdue notices was changed, making it really hard for students to get fined. She also eliminated the no-food/drink policy, and installed a few trash cans large enough to hold pizza boxes. A policy of trust was adopted, and the searching of bags as students leave the library was eliminated. Schultz encourages other novice librarians to fearlessly find their own voice and style and make librarianship their own.
