Race and Reform: Educational "Niche Picking" In a Hostile Environment.
Hubbard, Lea; Mehan, Hugh
Journal of Negro Education, v68 n2 p213-26 Spr 1999
Describes the implementation of a reform model aimed at improving the academic opportunity and achievement of African American youth in a southern community. Data from site visits and interviews with parents, teachers, students, counselors, and administrators indicated that the program encountered resistance whenever it challenged preconceived notions regarding race and intelligence and challenged schools to untrack classes.
