The Impact of Student Councils on a Suburban North Carolina School System's Middle and High Schools
Wall, James P., IV.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
The purpose of this mixed methods study is to examine the effects of student council involvement on academic performance and on school climate and culture. The quantitative research examines the impact between middle and high school students' involvement in student council and their grade point average. In addition, the quantitative research examines the relationship between the National Association of Student Council standards and best practices and the answers of middle and high school student council members and advisers, and principals on surveys about the standards. Further quantitative data measure the demographics and functions of student councils. Additionally, the study seeks to analyze middle and high school student council adviser perceptions of leadership and the purpose of student council and student council advisers. School systems can utilize this information to focus on addressing the need for student councils in their schools, as well as help middle and high schools improve student council programs to help teach students leadership skills needed in the twenty-first century.
