The Effects of a Simulation Game on Mental Models about Organizational Systems
Reese, Rebecca M.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fielding Graduate University
This mixed methods study was designed to uncover evidence of change to mental models about organizational systems resulting from participation in a simulation game that is based on a system dynamics model. Thirty participants in a 2 day experiential workshop completed a pretest and posttest to assess learning about particular systems concepts. Quantitative analysis was conducted using the Observation Oriented Modeling (OOM) approach. Qualitative analysis included a priori and inferential codes. There were changes for 90% of the participants on at least some of the systems concepts, while three individuals demonstrated little learning. Views of systems concepts changed, indicating that participant mental models may have shifted. Mental models about the importance of support functions, delays, and long-term view changed, while organizational view did not. Engagement levels were optimal throughout. Although demographic factors did not explain differences in learning, more tenure at the sponsoring organization aligned with higher levels of learning, and team performance tended to cluster. Implications for practice included recommendations for changes to the game and facilitation, especially debriefing. There were several recommendations for future research.
