This document is designed to teach concepts of source reduction, recycling, composting, and integrated waste management to kindergarten through grade six students. The lessons correlate to grade level and include sections on the lesson's concepts, purpose, overview, correlations to California's content standards and frameworks, scientific thinking process, time, vocabulary, preparation, materials, pre-activity questions, procedure, discussion/questions, application, extension, resources, and background information for teachers. The content is divided into two modules. The K-3 module includes five units: (1) "Conserving Natural Resources"; (2) "Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling Classroom Waste"; (3) "Vermicomposting"; (4) "Proper Disposal of Waste"; and (5) "Proper Management of Household Hazardous Waste." The 4-6 grade module features 4 units: (1) "Managing and Conserving Natural Resources"; (2) "Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling"; (3) "Composting"; and (4) "Proper Management of Household Hazardous Waste." Appendices contain instructional materials, an overview of integrated waste management, an overview of specific materials, setting up and maintaining composting systems, Closing the Loop vocabulary, Web sites, and a local area template.
