A lock box for investigating preschool children's problem-solving behavior was used with 17 Down syndrome children and 17 normal children, all of whom had a mean age of 37.4 months. Small children showed greater competence, more organization, and less perseverance than those with Down syndrome. (RH)

Longitudinal and cross-sectional investigations of children from three different cultural settings reveal the emergence of behaviors during the last half of the second year which imply the first appreciation of standards on prohibited actions, recognition of the ability to gain goals, and awareness of the self's feeling states. Mothers in one sample were interviewed when children were 1.5, 2, and 2.5 years old, while mothers in the other sample answered questionnaires when their children were 3.5, 5, and 7 years old. Strong emotional attachment to objects and finger-sucking were most prevalent around 2 years of age. (MP)
