In Control: A Skill-Building Program for Teaching Young Adolescents To Manage Anger.
Kellner, Millicent H.
This program guide was written to help teach young people effective anger management skills. Geared toward adolescents of middle school age and intended for in-class use, the sessions are readily adaptable for use in small group or individual contexts. The main goal is to help youngsters gain the awareness and skills to manage their anger so that they can achieve self control and develop a repertoire of prosocial behaviors. The material is divided into ten sessions which can be adjusted to accommodate individual situations. Each session includes Goals Statement; Objectives Statement; Materials List; Overview; and Leader Script. Supplementary materials include Connecting Activities, which establish a cross-curricular link between anger management and academic studies; Review Sheets, to create a link between the previous and present lessons and to help students consolidate the information they've learned; Leader Checklists, to help monitor performance and summarize the topics discussed; and Student Anger Management Folders, for students to keep their materials. Appendixes include sample Booster Sessions for supporting further skill development; a Program Evaluation to determine how much the students have learned; and suggestions for organizing a school-wide nonviolence week in order to support students as they practice their new prosocial behaviors. (Contains 31 references and 4 appendixes.) (Author/ADT)
