School Law. Fourth Edition.
Ware, Martha L.; Remmlein, Madaline Kinter
This volume presents the legal principles and judicial interpretations that constitute the legal framework within which teachers work. Part 1, on problems of teacher personnel, covers such legal issues as certification and employment, contracts, dismissals, and loyalty requirements. Part 2 concerns legal issues related to race and the schools. Part 3, on legal problems related to students, includes such issues as admission and attendance, transportation, textbooks, and student conduct. Each chapter consists primarily of statutory material (excerpts from laws) and case material (excerpts from court decisions). Preceding these excerpts is editorial comment explaining the legal principles involved. A statutory note and a case note point out the principles involved in each excerpt, the reasons the court made the decision, and the prevailing or minority rule. The final section of each chapter is a work sheet suggesting a related project or questions to be used by readers in applying the principles to their own state and local laws and regulations. The appendix on how to find school laws gives detailed instructions, with exhibits from law books showing the type of publication referred to in the text. The volume is intended as a text in school law courses or as a resource for school personnel or school board members. (Author/JM)
