Ten Game-Changing Communications Steps for College and University Presidents
Jacobson, Susan
New England Journal of Higher Education, Jan 2016
In this article Susan Jacobson offers advice on connecting and leading as a college or university president, whether new to the job or with years of experience. The key, Jacobson says, is communicating. She explains that while it might sound obvious, the importance of reaching out, connecting, and building and maintaining relationships cannot be stressed enough. Done well, it can lead toward great success, and done poorly, it can have a negative impact on one's priorities and initiatives. University and college presidents serve an average of nine years in the position which presents a huge opportunity to build a profile internally and in the wider community. In her work with new presidents of higher education institutions, ranging from large research universities to smaller liberal arts colleges, Jacobson starts with an initial framework to build a personalized and fully inclusive communications approach. Though this framework is geared toward new presidents, its tenets are crucial to maintain throughout a presidency. Herein, she shares the top 10 tips that, based on her experience, every new college and university president should consider in order to capitalize on this unique opportunity.
