This issue of the children's quarterly magazine, "The Goldfinch," focuses on World War I. A brief discussion of how the United States came to enter the War is followed by a discussion of propaganda. An article on the use of posters to encourage citizens to participate in the war effort is illustrated with reproductions of several of these posters. A further article, also illustrated with poster reproductions, discusses how U.S. citizens at home helped the war effort by saving fuel and food and by loaning money to the federal government. An article about Camp Dodge, near Des Moines, describes the soldiers' life there and is illustrated with photographs. This is followed by a short discussion of the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918. Another article, about World War I songs, is illustrated with words and music of two songs: "I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier," and "Over There." Iowa Governor Harding's "Babel Proclamation" is used as an example of the consequences of fear during war. Excerpts from the diary of a 15-year-old Iowa girl give some idea of what life was like for teenagers during the War.
