Interlibrary Loan and Post-Secondary Libraries in British Columbia. Report of a Project, September 1977-April 1978.
Stuart-Stubbs, Basil
This report of a project conducted to improve the sharing of library resources in the post-secondary sector in British Columbia focuses on the operations of the Interlibrary Loan Network, which went into operation September 1, 1977. This network was designed to provide access to the library collections at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Victoria, for faculty and students at all provincially supported post-secondary institutions in B.C. Analysis of data for the academic year 1977-78 showed that the university libraries supplied 12,744 items, with a success request rate of 70.8 percent. About 80 percent of these successful requests were filled within seven calendar days or less; the main factors affecting turnaround time were delays in communication and geographical location. Lower unit costs were achieved when the volume of transactions increased during peak months. Two other complementary projects which are noted were designed to create and distribute computer-output- microform catalogs of the holdings of the university libraries, and to create a union catalog of the holdings of all post-secondary libraries. A discussion of some of the broader aspects of access to libraries and proposals for further improving that access conclude the report. (Author/CMV)
