Adolescent parents are unprepared for parenthood. Their lack of preparedness places their children at risk for maltreatment. This educational program was designed to enhance the parenting skills of adolescent mothers thereby reducing the risk for maltreatment among their children. This parenting skills training program consisted of six weekly sessions focused on: (1) child development from birth to age 2; (2) positive reinforcement techniques; (3) discipline techniques; (4) cognitive restructuring techniques; and (5) problem-solving techniques. An evaluation component was developed and administered to pregnant and parenting students. The results of this program were mixed. Analysis of the data revealed that although the students indicated that the program was helpful to them and that they felt they had the skills necessary to be a good parent, only 38 of the 58 students were able to give appropriate responses as to how they would handle problematic situations without using corporal punishment. The results in the areas of empathy and positive reinforcement techniques were positive. It is recommended that program length be increased from 6 to 18 weeks; that students missing classes should receive handouts; that the program should be run at all sites; and that children in daycare should be videotaped so that students could learn from observation.
