4-H Youth Development is an educational movement founded to create opportunities for youth to understand their dependence on nature's resources and to value the fullest development of hand, head, and heart. It originated in the 1900s as "four-square education": educational development, fellowship development, physical development, and moral development. For more than one hundred years, 4-H has been responding to the question, What does it take to assist young people to become healthy, problem-solving, constructive adults? A major concept of 4-H learning philosophy is "learning by doing." In this article, the author discusses how the learning philosophies adopted at 4-H can provide example for other schools in preparing students for twenty-first century environment.
