The American College President, 1636-1989: A Critical Review and Bibliography. Bibliographies and Indexes in Education Number 10.
Sontz, Ann H. L.
This 1,386-entry bibliography includes materials relevant to early American and nineteenth-century academic presidencies and encompasses a specialized corpus of literature written by academic administrators since the early 1960s. The bibliography is divided into four general areas: bibliographies; background sources; biographies; and presidential works. The volume's foreword describes the bibliography's organization and discusses selection criteria. The bibliography itself is preceded by a brief introductory essay that outlines a few of the major trends that have dominated research on the academic presidency, as well as a critical review of the past and current role of the college president and the changes in function and perception of this role from early America to 1988. The separate section on background works includes general and theoretical works on the study of higher education and academic leadership; historical studies; references to criteria for presidential assessment and selection; citations relevant to academic finance, fundraising, and philanthropy; and references to issues confronting presidents of women's, minority, and sectarian institutions. The volume contains author and subject indexes. (GLR)
