Physics Careers, Employment and Education. AIP Conference Proceedings, No. 39.
Perl, Martin L., Ed.
This publication contains the proceedings of a Conference on Changing Career Opportunities for Physicists, held at the Pennsylvania State University, August 1-3, 1977. The purpose of the conference was to study present and future manpower problems in the physics profession. The breadth and depth of the conference is demonstrated by these proceedings. Aspects of physics employment and physics careers were discussed by speakers from government, from industry, and from the academic world. In addition, many areas of physics education relevant to careers in physics were examined. The speakers and participants included undergraduate students, graduate students, physicists doing applied research, physicists doing basic research, managers, administrators, employment and manpower experts, self-employed physicists, and physics teachers at all levels from the junior college through the university. Emphasis were on the following questions: (1) What changes in traditional employment patterns have taken place and will take place?; (2) What non-traditional employment possibilities have developed?; (3) How should the physics community act to broaden the opportunities open to its new members?; and (4) Should the universities further revise their programs and attitudes?
