An Interview with Jose Eustaquio Romao
Jordao, Clarissa Menezes
Language and Intercultural Communication, v7 n4 p291-295 Nov 2007
In anticipation of the European Union (EU) Year of Intercultural Dialogue, 2008, Clarissa Menezes Jordao interviewed Jose Eustaquio Romao, Director of the Paulo Freire Institute in Brazil. Her edited translation of that interview is presented here. In the interview Romao, guided by the legacy of Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire, discusses the concept of dialogism in comparing the belief systems of Freirean educators to that of Marxist educators. Freirean views regarding the influence of global and local cultures on educators' classes and school curricula as well school content and its relationship to power and oppression are also discussed.
