Policies and procedures covering graduate teaching assistants (TAs) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are presented. A TA's duties may include classroom teaching under the direction of a faculty member, assisting in teaching classes, discussion groups, problem-solving sessions or laboratories, assisting in planning courses and developing instructional materials; preparing and grading exams; evaluating student assignments; and serving on assignment committees. Teaching assistant appointment concerns include: equal appointment opportunity, types of appointments, guarantees of long-term support, probationary period, appointments during the fifth year and beyond the sixth year of graduate study, appointment criteria, experience levels, stipends, course assignment, summer session appointments, English proficiency, and sick leave and maternity or paternity leave.
