Developed to provide seventh and eighth grade students information about careers in the hospitality and recreation occupational cluster, this booklet may be used to integrate career information with various subject areas. (It is one of several student booklets developed for use in the Ohio Career Orientation Program at grades 7 and 8 to assist students in making tentative career decisions for exploration activities in grades 9 and 10.) Six major categories of hospitality and recreation careers are briefly described with several job titles listed for each. A closer look at five careers is provided through brief case studies of one individual working in each job: maintenance worker in a metropolitan park, animal keeper in the zoo, lifeguard, camp counselor, and recreation director. Brief exploration activities are suggested through which students can learn more about the jobs. A chart is provided with notes on how various school subjects (home economics, English, social science, industrial arts, physical education, music, science, art, and mathematics) are related to the hospitality and recreation cluster careers. A list of qualities needed for hospitality and recreation careers and a list of sources for additional career information (professional associations and specific government bulletins) are included along with a vocabulary list, notes on employment outlook, and questions to guide students' decision making.
