Impacts of Latino Culture on the Leadership Styles of Latino Community College Administrators
Aguinaga, Jose Alberto
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
The researcher for this mixed-methods study investigated if the leadership skills of Latino community college administrators were influenced by their Latino culture. Per the U.S. Census, the increasing number of Latino students entering higher education will continue to expand in the 21st century. Meeting the demand of a changing student body demographic in various parts of the United States is essential. Are community colleges prepared to face this change? The researcher asked two questions that may provide a greater understanding as to why Latino community college administrators are important. The two research questions were: 1) Are there specific leadership styles related to Latino community college administrators? 2) Are there distinguishing impacts from Latino culture reflected in the leadership styles of Latino community college administrators? These questions were addressed during each phase of the study. The quantitative portion of the study involved two Likert-scale online surveys: Bolman and Deal's Leadership Orientation and the Papa Leadership Scale. In the qualitative portion of the study, interviews were conducted with the narrative inquiry methodology. Results from each phase of this study provided insightful findings. Participants were asked seven open-ended questions. Findings from this mixed-methods study confirmed past contributions found in the literature and added recommendations for future research.
