This study examined the essential skill sets needed to effectively perform as a school business official in New York State. This study surveyed 132 practicing school business officials across New York State and created a needs-based assessment of the competencies required to successfully perform as a New York State school business official. In addition, this study also identified four distinct models of shared viewpoints regarding the competencies required for effective performance of the school business function. The four models that emerged from the data were entitled: (1) Leadership and Organizational Skills and Techniques; (2) Technical Skills and Techniques; (3) Financial and Economic Skills and Techniques; and (4) Human Resource Skills and Techniques. This research was approached from a constructivist philosophical perspective and employed an observational and descriptive research design in addition to analyzing the associations between various demographic factors. This observational research utilized Q-methodology, a mixed methods research approach that utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods for conducting observational research. The results of this study can be utilized by school boards and administration to provide current and or future school business officials with appropriate professional development opportunities to more accurately meet the requisite demands of the profession. In addition, institutions of higher education and the New York State Education Department may find the results of this study essential in revising educational and training requirements for state certification. Finally, professional associations may find the results of this study pertinent and expand training and professional development opportunities to their memberships.
