Annual Report of Indian Education in Montana. Johnson-O'Malley Activities, Fiscal Year 1975.
Montana State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Helena.
In fiscal year 1975, Montana's Johnson-O'Malley (JOM) funds provided services for 6,869 eligible Indian students. JOM funds provided transportation, boarding homes, home-school coordinators, cultural enrichment programs, nurse coordinators, study centers, consultation service, writing projects, summer programs, special teachers, and workshops for teacher aides. During the year, local Indian parent advisory committees began to develop constitutions and by-laws, depending on the amount of input they were allowed in local school programs. Other JOM statewide projects were the Montana Indian Youth Practicum (a training course in study and practical application of problems in Indian self-government), the annual All-Indian High School Speech Tournament, and the annual Indian Education Conference. This report presents the school reports of JOM funded projects, a brief description of the statewide projects, the JOM annual financial report, the administrative budget, a summary of allocations, enrollment data, a summary of enrollment and financial report, and a listing of Elementary and Secondary Education Act Title I projects funded for 1974-75. Tabular data pertain to JOM allocations and numbers of eligible Indian student participants for fiscal years 1948-1975; JOM allocations by reservations; and Montana Indian reservation fiscal year 1975 statistics on enrollments, teachers, and school board members.
