In 1970 Johnson-O'Malley (JOM) funds were relieved of the necessity of supporting school lunches for Indian children, and were channeled into special project activities. JOM funds were made available for kindergarten programs. In fiscal year 1973, 22 kindergarten units were in operation. The program also included transportation, boarding homes, home-school coordinators, nurse coordinators, cultural enrichment programs, Indian language programs, consultation service, study centers, writing projects, summer programs, special teachers, and workshops for teacher aides of Indian children. Also in fiscal year 1973, 28 Johnson-O'Malley Advisory Committees were formed to involve Indian people at the school level in planning and selection of projects for JOM funds. JOM programs were funded on the Blackfeet, Crow, Flathead, Fort Belknap, Fort Peck, Northern Cheyenne, and Rocky Boy Indian Reservations. JOM projects were also funded at Eastern Montana College and the University of Montana. This report presents the school reports of JOM funded projects, the JOM annual financial report, the JOM administrative budget, a summary of allocations, and an enrollment and financial report. Tabular data pertain to JOM allocations and numbers of eligible Indian students for fiscal years 1948-1973; JOM allocations by reservations; Indian students having any degree Indian blood enrolled in public and private schools from 1960 to 1973; Indian student dropouts by public school and reservation during 1972-73; and Indian students graduating from high schools on or adjacent to Indian reservations.
