President's Inaugural Address: We Call It School Nursing
Mattey, Beth
Journal of School Nursing, v31 n4 p241-245 Aug 2015
The incoming President of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) traditionally outlines the theme for their presidency during their inaugural address. This address is given by incoming President of the NASN, Beth Mattey, who discusses previous themes that supported the mission of NASN, but changed every two years with each new president. She believes that the NASN needs one image/brand so that the logo is recognized and immediately linked to school nurses and the impact school nurses have on the health and academic success of students. She states her support of the brand platform of the NASN: "School Nurses Build a Foundation for Student Health and Education." Health and education are interdependent--school nurses collaborate with students, the school community, families, the health care community, the community at large, and government agencies so that children are in school, healthy, safe, and ready to learn. There is much more to educating a child than lessons, homework, and tests. Students are fortunate to have the infrastructure that supports the health of students. Mattey emphasizes the importance of having a professional school nurse in every school to care for every child because she believes that school nursing is the foundation for student health.
