Psychological and Organizational Correlates of Career Patterns in Clinical Laboratory Occupations.
Jeswald, Thomas Anthony
The purpose of the project was to provide research data concerning attitudes and satisfactions of present clinical laboratory employees which would be helpful in planning future recruitment and retention efforts. Questionnaires requesting information regarding the personal and work histories, work attitudes, career plans, and need satisfaction of each respondent were sent to the administrators of 124 hospitals in Indiana and Illinois to be distributed to their laboratory employees. Over 1,600 forms were returned. A separate questionnaire was completed by 66 clinical pathologists to determine administrative goals and attitudes toward subordinate laboratory staffs. Some findings of the study included: (1) Lab personnel were more committed to their careers than some other semi-professionals have been found to be, and non-monetary rewards would help reinforce this commitment, (2) There was no difference in commitment of minority group personnel, and (3) Part-time personnel were less committed but more satisfied with all aspects of their work; however incentives such as day care facilities on the premises would help recruitment.
