Carving a Strong Identity: Investigating the Life Histories of Museum Educators
Reid, Natasha S.
Journal of Museum Education, v38 n2 p227-238 Jul 2013
This paper examines the need for more holistic, narrative-based research into the identities of museum educators. The author explores the increasing demands being placed on museum educators along with the substantial challenges experienced by these professionals amidst the changing climate of museums. Many museum educators feel that their museums' infrastructures provide insufficient support for them to fully realize their goals and their voices are often relegated to the sidelines of their institutions and the larger museum community. As Tina Nolan recently noted, during these challenging yet exciting times, it is essential for museum educators to "to carve out a new identity." In this article, the author demonstrates how the use of life history methodologies in museum educator research and professional development programs could assist in this important effort to develop a new, strong identity for museum educators.
