This manual is intended to be used in a 13-week course designed to familiarize students with the resources of the Suffolk Community College (New York) Ammerman Campus Library and teach them how to use the library to do basic research. The following topics are presented on a week-by-week basis: (1) Course Outline and Introduction to the Library; (2) Locating Books--Using the Microfiche Catalog and Classification Systems; (3) Researching a Topic and Developing a Research Strategy; (4) Encyclopedias; (5) Pamphlet Files and Borrowing from Other Libraries; (6) Periodicals Indexes--Magazines and Journals; (7) Periodicals Indexes--Newspapers; (8) Indexes to Works in Collections; (9) Using Reference Sources; (10) College and Career Information Sources; (11) Biographical Information--Search Strategies and Sources; (12) Literary Criticism--Search Strategies and Sources; and (13) Supplemental Sources of Information. Objectives to be achieved by completing each week's assignment are also provided, and a glossary of literary terms and a guide to preparing a bibliography are appended. (KM)
