In 1979, a study was conducted at Charles Stewart Mott Community College (MCC) to draw a profile of "successful" students and determine the level of reading achievement necessary for successful college work. "Successful" students were defined as those who had completed most of their coursework and were nearing graduation; therefore, the sample was drawn from students enrolled in advanced sophomore courses or in courses offered in the second semester of one-year programs. The study involved: (1) the administration of questionnaires to 828 students to obtain information on their major, sex, age, ethnicity, credit load, employment, future educational plans, and participation in a reading improvement course; (2) the administration of the Nelson-Denny Reading Test to these students; (3) a comparison of the characteristics of "successful" students with those of the entire student body, as determined in a Fall 1978 study; and (4) a comparison of the reading scores of "successful" students with scores earned by Fall 1978 entering students on the Cooperative English Tests: Reading Comprehension, Form B. The study revealed a great deal of variation in the reading skill levels of "successful" students, with 134 reading below the tenth grade level, thus identifying no minimal level below which MCC students do not succeed.
