The lesson described in this article meets several needs for Advanced Placement Human Geography (APHG®) teachers. In the interest of preserving time in the classroom, this lesson is intended to be a capstone assignment, allowing students to synthesize several concepts of the APHG® curriculum, such as demography, economic development, and cultural patterns. In addition, it requires that students apply their knowledge of information to this site location exercise. Site location exercises are utilized throughout human geography (e.g., Weber's industrial location theory). Students need to be able to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. "Social studies educators prepare students to think holistically, typically integrating the political, social, and economic realms. They also need to teach about spatial relationships and how those human attributes interact with the natural world, often differently depending upon the time and the place" (Mitchell, Cantrill, and Kearse 2012). The lesson requires students to engage with their local community and apply concepts learned through the APHG® course. Concurrently, students will be using GIS technology in a hands-on fashion at an introductory level. This lesson was also designed knowing that teachers now have the ability to access and use GIS in their classroom as a result of the ConnectED Initiative provided by Esri. Finally, this lesson will ideally pique students' interest in the use of GIS to problem solve and to think critically. Procedures for developing and concluding the lesson are included.
