Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a sometimes debilitating condition affecting many young musicians as they perform in testing or concert settings. These students may consult their teachers to seek aid in overcoming their anxiety. The purpose of this multiple case study was to investigate the strategies and methods utilized by middle and high school music teachers to address the MPA experienced by their students. Participants were a purposeful sample of instrumental music teachers from public schools in a large Southwestern city, and were chosen to cover a broad spectrum of teaching experience, gender, and area of expertise (band, orchestra). Results of the study revealed trends in degree of teacher preparation and training for MPA situations and types of symptoms observed. Participants also reported similarities regarding student ages and degrees of experienced anxiety.
