Music: Comprehensive Musicianship Program. Grade 5.
Burton, Leon H., Ed.; Thomson, William, Ed.
This fifth grade text provides music and rhythmic activities for the development of both musical skills and appreciation. The learning of music symbols, notes, chords, rhythm, harmony, and specific songs is stressed. While most of the songs were composed in the contiguous 48 United States, music from Hawaii and from other countries is included. Lessons are presented which offer beginning instruction for the ukulele, the recorder, and the resonator bells; and rhythm is taught through the introduction of Hawaiian, Samoan, and New Zealand folk dances. Music from the "Nutcracker Ballet" and "Die Fledermaus" illustrates dance movements, ballet, and operetta music. Appendices include ukulele and recorder fingering charts and both a classified subject and an alphabetical index of songs. (JHP)
