Group Development through Environmental and Outdoor Education. A Resource to Supplement the Alberta Education Junior High Environmental and Outdoor Education Course of Studies.

This resource booklet is designed to facilitate the teaching of group development as part of an integrated program of outdoor pursuits, environmental education and personal and group development. Section I provides a history of the Alberta Environmental and Outdoor Education Course of Studies, and the course philosophy. Resources are provided for planning and organizing implementation of the program in schools. Topics discussed include tailoring the program; program scope, sequence, quality, and balance; approaches to teaching; and management details. Section II outlines group development goals, and provides environmental activities for group development in an outdoor educational setting. These activities concentrate on building group skills (including sharing, trust, and cooperation) through the use of simulations, recreation, group special events, and fine arts (focusing on music, art, and drama).
