Sloan, Irving J., Comp.
Many unacknowledged contributions made by black individuals to American civilization from 1492 to 1970 are enumerated in this compact book, one of a series of ethnic chronologies. Intended primarily as a reference work, a major part of this book is the factual chronological listing of achievements negroes made throughout United States history as developers, inventors, defenders, leaders, performers in the field of theatre, art, music, literature, and especially as contributors to democracy. Included are: a seventy-six item selected bibliography of books and a listing of eight bibliographies, a listing of thirty-three collection locations on black history and literature; excerpts from three land mark civil rights executive orders; a course outline of Afro-American history from 1450 to the present; album titles of a cross-section of Afro-American folk music with bibliographic information; black colleges and universities listed alphabetically by state; a listing of state agencies assigned with civil rights responsibilities; a directory of over fifty black organizations with primary objectives; major black American newspaper and serial publications alphabetically listed by state; a listing of museums and monuments to blacks and black culture, with locations and other visitor information; selected quotations about and by negroes providing evidence of negro history; a list of black members of the Congress; and a statistical abstract of Afro-Americans in the United States.
