Movement in Steady Beat: Learning on the Move, Ages 3-7. Second Edition.
Weikart, Phyllis S.
The ability to feel and maintain steady, rhythmic beat is important for children to develop in early childhood and will assist them in mastering concepts in language and literacy, mathematics, and other content areas as well as increase body coordination and related physical abilities. Designed as an activity supplement to High Scope movement and dance activities, this book presents activities to help preschool and kindergarten children, ages 3 to 7 years, learn how to feel and maintain a steady beat. The introductory chapter to the book provides an overview of each of the four components of the movement-based active learning process: (1) key experiences in movement; (2) movement core; (3) teaching model; and (4) teaching strategies. The remainder of the book is organized in two sections. Section 1 presents 12 activities using rhymes, and Section 2 presents 25 action song activities. Each activity entry includes the following components: title, text, age range for the activity, key experiences, curriculum concepts, activity descriptions, needed materials, suggested lesson plan, facilitation and reflection suggestions for extending children's thinking, and extensions for making the activity more appropriate for older or younger children. A musical score is provided for each action song and a compact disk containing the rhymes and songs is included with the book. (KB)
