In 1986, a study was conducted at Middlesex Community College (MxCC) to examine selected demographics of that year's graduating class and to compare them with similar statistics compiled for 1985 graduates. The graduating classes were compared in terms of students' major, sex, age, full-/part-time status, average number of semesters attended, calendar year of initial enrollment, grade point average (GPA), transfer of credits, and participation in remedial programs. Study findings included the following: (1) the number of graduates decreased from 284 in 1985 to 263 in 1986; (2) 20.9% of the 1986 graduates attended MxCC on a full-time basis, compared to 12.8% of the 1985 class; (3) the average number of semesters attended to complete the degree dropped from 7.07 to 6.86, with General Business majors evidencing a decrease from 8.09 to 5.94 semesters; (4) students' average GPA declined from 3.021 to 2.996, with women over 24 years of age earning the highest average; (5) 51.3% of the 1986 graduates used transfer credits, compared to 45.2% of the 1985 class; and (6) the number of graduates who took remedial courses declined, though 33.5% of the 1986 class had taken remedial math.
