Exploring the "Dragon's Graveyard"
Ballard, Stuart
Primary Science Review, n96 p20-23 Jan-Feb 2007
Most schools visit Magna Science Adventure Centre on the back of careful planning and preparation. Magna is a fairly unique environment. "Steelos", the local name for the former Templeborough steelworks in Rotherham, West Yorkshire, was a vast plant. It became home to Magna in 2001. The building is over half a kilometre long and 45 metres high. Its enormous, dark, brooding metal structures have a powerful impact on visitors, young and old. Magna's designers looked back in time to Aristotle, mulled over the raw materials for steel-making and came up with "Air, Earth, Fire" and "Water" as the main themes for the exhibition. In this article, the author describes the Air, Earth, Fire and Water Pavilions at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, and how to get the best out of them. The author offers ideas for simple follow-up activities that teachers can try out at school. (Contains 5 figures.)
