The Future of Biofeedback Training in the Field of Special Education.
Walton, Wilbur T.
Biofeedback training (a process of feeding back to an organism information pertaining to its physiological functions using signals transmitted through sensory receptors) stands as one method to better educate and treat handicapped children. Recent research establishes that it is possible to influence automatic processes (such as breathing) intentionally, voluntarily, by directing physical changes with one's focus of attention. Biofeedback training has been shown to improve self image, relieve tension, remediate academic skills through anxiety reduction, coordinate malfunctioning muscles, reduce central nervous system dysfunction, control basal metabolism, and treat vascular disorders. Since there is evidence to show that biofeedback training in the classroom can assist the student in staying alert, feeling better, and being able to explore his inner space with more efficiency, biofeedback may have great potential for the handicapped child.
