The Power of Storytelling: An Interview with Mari-Louise Olsson, the Executive Director of the Museum of Molndal
Clasnocha, Danuta
Journal of Museum Education, v31 n1 p63-69 Spr 2006
The Museum of Molndal is a municipal museum located in an abandoned factory along the rapids of Kvarnbyn, a national heritage area in Molndal, just south of Gothenburg, Sweden. It is known for its innovative work based on cooperation with the local inhabitants, schools and other organizations, by involving them in creating exhibitions or developing educational programs. This work has gained international recognition, receiving one of the five honors delegated by the European Museum of the Year Award 2005. The Museum of Molndal stores approximately 10, 000 objects, most of them originating from the 1900s, in so-called Open Storage, where visitors are permitted to wander around. The objects bring memories to life, stimulating visitors to tell stories from their past. The museum bases its work on this concept of storytelling. All the stories and digital photographs of each object are stored in databases available on computers in the museum and on the museum website. Storytelling is also an important part of the Reminiscence Project, a project that is being developed in collaboration with the eldercare in Molndal. The purpose of this project is to teach the staff a working method that focuses on the elderly and their life stories, to increase their standard of living.
