Reading the Media: Media Literacy in High School English
Hobbs, Renee
Teachers College Press
This pioneering book, by one of the founders of the media literacy field, provides evidence of the impact of media literacy on the academic achievement of adolescents. Read about the practice of high school teachers who prepared their students to critically analyze all aspects of contemporary media culture. These teachers incorporated popular and digital media, television, journalism, and film into the required English curriculum. Here the reader will find the processes they used to design and implement the innovative new curriculum as well as discussion of the specific, measurable impact the program had on students. This accessible, practical resource: (1) Documents how a media literacy course significantly improved reading comprehension, writing, critical analysis, and other academic skills; (2) Offers practical information for teachers attempting to bring media literacy into their classroom, including lesson plans and activities; and (3) Examines how media literacy education increases motivation and builds citizenship skills with teens. This book consists of three parts: (1) Media Literacy in Context; (2) Teaching Media Literacy; and (3) Measuring Media Literacy. Appended are: (1) Research Design and Methodology; and (2) Curriculum Resources Used in English II. A list of references; and an index are also included.
