Focused Observation and Feedback of Nonverbal Behavior.
Field, Judd F.; Bradley, Banks T.
A feedback and analysis instrument measuring nonverbal teacher behavior is presented which focuses on fourteen specific behaviors. Data obtained from the instrument may be analyzed for each of the behaviors and developed into a quantified ratio of those categories tending to signal positive influence by the teacher toward the pupil and those tending to signal negative influence by the teacher toward the pupil. The behaviors focused upon are: (1) frowning facial expressions; (2) smiling facial expressions; (3) sarcastic, negative, discouraging facial experssions; (4) positive, relaxing, or tension-breaking facial expressions; (5) eye movement; (6) eye contact; (7) shaking of the head in a back and forth motion; (8) nodding of the head in an up and down fashion; (9) avoidance; (10) approach; (11) distracting idiosyncrasies; (12) gestures tending to vary the stimuli, but of a nondistracting character; (13) nonverbal control; and (14) manipulating the environment or an object which tends to vary the stimuli.
