Implementation of an Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) education program in Oklahoma is briefly outlined in the areas of the state mandate, local implementation, teacher training, parent meetings, and short and long courses. A study of the level of student knowledge about AIDS before and after instruction is described. Subjects were 7,145 students, grades 5 through 12, in a large inner city school system. Pretesting with a locally developed instrument indicated a fairly strong knowledge base prior to instruction. Instruction time varied from three to five class periods depending on grade level. Posttesting showed the majority of students had increased knowledge, particularly in the areas of causes, means of transmission, and authoritative sources of information. However, there was evidence of lingering misconceptions.
