The New Sourcebook for Teaching Reasoning and Problem Solving in Elementary School. A Longwood Professional Book.
Krulik, Stephen; Rudnick, Jesse A.
Many teachers and administrators have recognized that problem solving and reasoning represent two of the primary goals in the education of children. In order for teachers to achieve these goals, they must have appropriate materials available to them. This book includes materials to help teach and assess problem solving and reasoning. The first six chapters provide suggestions for teaching and testing problem solving and reasoning, which is done by examining heuristic components in detail and supporting each with a series of problems and activities. Some of the discussion focuses on comprehensive assessment. Chapter 7 presents more than 100 nonroutine problems designed to intrigue children and to provide them with practice in problem solving and reasoning. Each problem is carefully discussed in the text portion of the book and is then reproduced on a black-line master. These masters, in card form, can be reproduced, cut, and mounted on cards to form a Problem Deck. Chapter 8 presents open-ended problems that can be used for evaluation and diagnostic assessment of problem solving and reasoning. The bulk of the book consists of three sections devoted to reproduction pages for the heuristics, masters for selected problems, and masters for open-ended problems. (MKR)
