Tri-M in Our Schools
Nielsen, Lance D.
Teaching Music, v18 n1 p24-27 Aug 2010
Winter had set in, and the local charity had already run out of warm coats. Students sprang into action. They made calls, rang doorbells, announced the need daily at school. Working together, they collected 87 coats--each with a hat, glove, and scarf set--with jeans, sweaters, shoes, and new toys thrown in as an additional gift. The students--all music students--organized their efforts through their school's Tri-M chapter. "There is no better way to celebrate the holiday season than by giving of one's time and oneself," one student reported. "This is what Tri-M is all about--being the best person you can be." As the author travels around the country, he encounters many music teachers who are unaware what the Tri-M Music Honor Society is all about and what benefits it can bring to a school music program. Tri-M is more than just another honor society; it's a student organization that promotes and advocates the importance of music education within the school and community. This article discusses the history, purpose, and importance of this international music honor society.
