This book extends ethnography beyond the work of university researchers to include classroom teachers, student teachers, and teacher educators. It provides ways for student teachers and others to develop lenses for seeing the patterns and practices of life within classrooms. The book describes how developing "ethnographic eyes" can help student teachers understand the importance of suspending judgment so that they can learn how to see learning in the actions of members, to acquire insider knowledge of teaching and learning processes in different classroom sites, and to act in professionally competent ways. It demonstrates how ethnography can help teachers to see beneath the surface of classroom life, gain new understandings of diversity, and recognize that difference can be a resource for community building.
