Guar Near and Far: How One Crop Could Profit Lakota Country
Singh, Subodh K.
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v25 n4 May 2014
A Sinte Gleska University professor is exploring the feasibility of cultivating guar, one of the most expensive crops in the world, as a means to bring economic development to the Rosebud reservation and beyond. Guar is a drought-resistant industrial crop mainly grown in the Thar Desert of India and Pakistan. Since guar belongs to the legume family, it enriches the soil with nitrogen. Therefore it has potential to be grown as a rotating crop each year. Guar is growing successfully in all conditions, and South Dakota has the potential to become a hub for homegrown and processed guar. The Rosebud Indian Reservation covers 5,000 square miles in south-central South Dakota. It is the home of the Sicangu Lakota, or Rosebud Sioux. Sinte Gleska University (SGU) is located on the reservation in the community of Antelope and is the tribe's chartered institution of higher education. The area encompassed by the Rosebud reservation has historically been one of the most impoverished in the nation. One approach to achieve economic self-sufficiency may be to develop the reservation for guar cultivation and processing. Development of a homegrown guar industry has the potential to provide high-paying employment to tribal members, add billions of dollars to the local economy, save foreign exchange for the U.S., and, most importantly, return pride to Rosebud residents.
