One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide contains nine lessons on sidewalk vehicles and bicycles for use in kindergarten and grade 1. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and the traffic/pedestrian environment; instructions in using this program, explaining evaluation methods; Arizona laws and city ordinances for Mesa bicycle operation; governing and general rules for bicycle safety. The lessons cover the following subjects: sidewalk vehicles (tricycles, roller skates, wagons, skateboards, and small bicycles), their use, and care; and bicycles, their size, riding positions, safe use, and maintenance. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include class discussions, games, learning songs, coloring and drawing, demonstrations of bicycle care and use, and storytelling. (ELG)
