Promoting Educational Equity through School Libraries: Instructor's Guide.
Tyler, Karen Beyard; Nilsen, Alleen Pace
This manual for instructors conducting the "Promoting Educational Equity through School Libraries" continuing education program for inservice school media specialists provides suggestions for classroom discussions, as well as answers to and notes on the questions contained in the workbook. The training program is designed to develop the following: (1) ability to describe sexist assumptions and ways in which they are communicated, (2) ability to identify instances of sexism in instructional materials, (3) ability to identify sex-fair materials, (4) ability to describe inadequacies of existing information collections, (5) ability to build sex-fair collections, (6) ability to promote equity through library practices, (7) ability to promote equity through work with pupils, and (8) ability to promote equity through consulting activities with school personnel. Answers to tests and exercises are keyed to the five training modules: assumptions about male and female, sexism and sex-role stereotyping, sex-fair instructional materials, sex-fair library resources, and educational equity in the library. In addition, four immediate program evaluation strategies are given. (FM)
