One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide contains four lessons and an appendix of school bus safety tips for use in grade 3. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and passenger safety; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; Arizona law and regulations governing pupil transportation; a form to report misconduct on the school bus; and rules for school bus safety. The lessons cover the following subjects: waiting for, boarding, and leaving the school bus; passenger conduct; and protection from sudden stops. An illustrated appendix gives twelve rules for school bus safety. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include learning poems and songs, role playing, class discussions, drawing, and quizzes. (ELG)
